Serbia setting the pace in Europe in vaccination against COVID-19

New York, 19 March 2021 – In his courtesy telephone call to United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres today, Ambassador Nemanja Stevanovic, the newly-appointed Permanent Representative of the Republic of Serbia to the United Nations, pointed to the importance that Serbia attaches to its cooperation with the United Nations as the only international organization with universal membership. He went on to say that the maintenance of its sovereignty and territorial integrity is of paramount importance for Serbia, just as is, in that context, the respect for UNSCR 1244 (1999), the most important international legal document for our country. He emphasized the importance of UNMIK’s engagement in Kosovo and Metohija, with unchanged mandate and undiminished scope. He also stressed Serbia’s commitment to multilateralism and recalled that Serbia had joined the appeal of the Secretary-General for a global ceasefire last year so that the world could focus on suppressing the COVID-19 pandemic. He advised of the concrete results of the vaccination programme in Serbia, emphasizing that, by the per capita vaccination, Serbia ranks second in Europe right after the United Kingdom, while it leads the field by the number of citizens who received second shots. Permanent Representative Stevanovic reiterated Serbia’s commitment to the safeguarding of international peace to which it makes a concrete contribution through its participation in United Nations peace missions. He pointed out that, with 260 soldiers and policemen currently deployed in peace missions worldwide, Serbia is eighth in Europe, i.e. second among the European countries with the same-size populations. He also said that, as a State Party to the Paris Agreement, Serbia invests considerable efforts domestically to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Secretary-General Guterres emphasized the status-neutral position of the United Nations towards the unilaterally declared independence of Kosovo and added that the United Nations attaches great attention to the activities of UNMIK. He assessed as very positive the results Serbia achieved in the implementation of the programme of population vaccination. He observed that Serbia had more success in that regard than many countries which are considered ahead of it developmentally. He recalled that, in his previous position as United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees he had assessed as very positive the way in which Serbia addressed the migrant crisis and its humane attitude towards migrants and commended, in that context, the cooperation he had with the then Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic.
